NORDEM Nordic Baltic Early Music Festival: From Source to Sound
14–17 October 2027 | Uppsala, Sweden
NORDEM is developing an exciting new initiative: the 1st Nordic Baltic Early Music Festival - From Source to Sound, an international festival and meeting place bringing together musicians, ensembles, researchers, students and cultural institutions from across the Nordic and Baltic region.
Planned to take place in Uppsala in October 2027, the festival will explore the field of Nordic and Baltic early music – from historical manuscripts and musical sources to their artistic interpretation and live performance. The festival is being developed in collaboration with Uppsala University and NORDEM's member organisations across the Nordic-Baltic region.
At the heart of the festival lies the close connection between historical research and artistic practice. Through concerts, academic seminars, workshops, research presentations and artistic discussions, From Source to Sound aims to create a unique platform where scholarship and performance inspire and enrich one another. The programme will highlight Nordic and Baltic repertoire, historically informed performance practice and important musical sources, including the internationally significant Düben Collection.
A shared platform for artistic exchange, research and international cooperation, encouraging new partnerships, professional connections and future co-productions is being created. The festival will also serve as an international showcase for the region's artists and ensembles, highlighting a shared musical heritage while exploring new perspectives on the future of early music.
With its first edition planned for 2027, NORDEM's ambition is to establish an international meeting place, connecting artists, scholars and audiences, fostering lasting cooperation and bringing the rich musical heritage of Northern Europe to life.
